Is there an official ChatGPT gift card?
Do not assume a universal ChatGPT gift card exists. Availability can change by country and product, and a gift card for one service is not automatically usable for a ChatGPT plan. Check the official OpenAI help pages before buying anything described as a gift card.
A generic prepaid card is also not the same thing. It may be declined for international online purchases, and it may not cover taxes or currency conversion.
The account is the gift
A subscription is tied to one ChatGPT account. If you want to gift a month of Plus, the cleanest route is to activate it on the recipient's own account. That keeps their chats, memory and settings intact.
Ask the recipient to confirm the exact email address on the account. Do not guess an address or use a shared family inbox unless they explicitly want that.

- Ask whether the account already has a paid plan.
- Agree who will handle support if delivery is delayed.
- Do not ask for the recipient's password.
Choose a delivery method that fits the gift
If the gift is a surprise, an automatic activation may arrive before you have a chance to explain it. A support-handled order can be timed more deliberately, but it still needs the account email.
Keep the order number yourself until the plan is confirmed. Send the recipient a short note explaining what was purchased and when it should appear.
Gifts and refunds
A delivered digital gift is usually not returnable. If the activation fails, the buyer should contact support with the order number and the recipient's account email. The recipient should not open a separate dispute.
Before paying, ask what proof of delivery you will receive. A clear order status is more useful than a promise that "it will work".
When a different gift is better
If you are not sure whether the recipient wants ChatGPT, a cash gift or a general-purpose card is more flexible. A subscription is a good gift only when the person already uses the product and will benefit from the paid tier.
For a team or a student, consider whether a personal plan, a Business seat or a different tool is the better fit before buying a surprise subscription.
